Stone Town
Let yourself be conquered by the stone city of Zanzibar
Stone Town has many tourist attractions to visit, among which the House of Wonders, the Sultan’s Palace or the Old Fort stand out above the rest.
The center of Stone Town is simply spectacular, made up of traditional buildings and streets of the Swahili culture that will never cease to amaze you at every turn, so prepare your camera because you will need it. You will love losing yourself among its seductive labyrinth of narrow alleys so characteristic, we could say that they are the essence of the city of stone.
At Sensation of Africa, we will prepare a complete tour in Stone Town with which we guarantee that you will not miss anything, enjoying your visit to the city to the fullest.
One of the most iconic places in Stone Town Zanzibar is the “ Old Fort ”, an old fort built by the Omanis in 1689 to defend themselves from attacks by Portuguese troops.
Next to the Old Fort is ” The House of Wonders “, a huge building ordered to be built by Sultan Barghash in 1883 that stands out for having the largest wooden doors in East Africa, being the first building to have an elevator in all of Zanzibar. Today it is the Museum of History and Culture of Zanzibar.
We continue with the “ Sultan’s Palace ”, which formerly housed the royal family of Zanzibar, and today it is a museum that displays details about them. It will leave you speechless with its spectacular and elegant Swahili-style facade.
One of the places we like the most is the “ Darajani Market ”, where you can fully immerse yourself in the Swahili culture, while observing the chaotic transactions of fruit, vegetables, fruit, fish and seafood.
If you really want to review the history of Stone Town and Zanzibar , one of the must-see places that will not leave you indifferent is the ” Old Slave Market “, closed in 1873.
You will be able to tour the old slave cells and see the harsh conditions in which the thousands of slaves who came to this market lived each year.
Above the slave market is currently the ” Anglican Cathedral ” of Stone Town, which is characterized as the first Anglican cathedral in East Africa, where there is an incredible monument in memory of all slaves.
Within the same city, as in other places further afield, we find farms where different plants and spice trees are grown, such as cloves, vanilla, meg, ginger, turmeric, and black paper along with different fruits.
You can visit one of these spice farms and let the aromas embrace us and its colors captivate us.
We believe that it is a must-see city during a trip to Tanzania, so at Sensation of Africa, we will prepare a tour of Stone Town, in which you will be accompanied by a local guide with extensive experience and knowledge of the city, and who will teach you all the most emblematic and hidden corners of the city of stone.
Immerse yourself in the history of Zanzibar in Stone Town.
