There are many questions like “How do I get to Tanzania? Can I fly directly to Tanzania? Which airlines fly directly to Tanzania? What is the best airport to fly to in Tanzania? What about the visa? Are there other entry requirements for Tanzania?”

Here is everything you need to know when traveling to Tanzania.

Which airlines fly directly to Tanzania? Can I fly directly to Tanzania?

Various airlines fly to Tanzania, such as Ethiopian Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines.

From Europe to Tanzania:

There are only two direct flights: from Amsterdam via KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to Kilimanjaro International Airport or from Istanbul via Turkish Airlines to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. There are no direct flights from the UK to Tanzania, but connecting flights are easy. Travelers from the UK can either fly to Amsterdam and connect to a direct flight or take Kenya Airways from London Heathrow and have an overnight flight (under nine hours) from London to Nairobi, Kenya, and then take a connecting flight to either Kilimanjaro International Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

From North America:

There are no direct flights from North America to Tanzania. Travelers must make two stops; one stop in Istanbul or Amsterdam and connect with Turkish Airlines to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or from Amsterdam via KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

From South America:

The most direct route from South America to Tanzania is through a direct flight from South African Airways from São Paulo, Brazil to Johannesburg, South Africa, before connecting to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

What is the best airport to fly to in Tanzania?

Tanzania has three international airports: Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar.

  • Kilimanjaro International Airport is the most common entry point as it is closest to major tourist destinations and Arusha, the gateway to popular safari destinations in Tanzania like the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, etc.

  • Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam is located in Tanzania’s central commercial city, the closest to southern travel destinations such as Saadani, Mikumi, Ruaha National Parks, and Selous Game Reserve, among others.

  • Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport takes you directly to the island of Zanzibar, and it’s mostly recommended for booking your departure flights to Tanzania from Zanzibar.

So, which is the best airport to land at in Tanzania?

This depends on the type of safari you have booked, your preferred route, or what we recommend based on your itinerary. If you have a wildlife safari + beach holiday, we recommend flying into Kilimanjaro Airport first, then taking a safari to the Serengeti and other northern circuit destinations. Afterward, you can fly from Serengeti/Arusha Airport to Zanzibar for a beach holiday, and then depart from Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, depending on your next destination flight.

You can also arrive at any airport for your convenience, as once you’re in the country, a good network of domestic flights connects key travel routes, and there is a constantly improving network of roads for overland travel.
