4 Days Mount Meru Trekking

4 Days Mount Meru Trekking

Trip Overview

Mount Meru is often overlooked due to its proximity to Kilimanjaro, but it offers a challenging climb for those seeking adventure. An inactive volcano that last erupted in 1910, it is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,566 meters (14,979 feet). Taking only 3 or 4 days to climb, it is perfect for those who want to experience high-altitude trekking without committing to a longer ascent, whether before or after a safari, or to aid acclimatization before climbing Kilimanjaro. It is ideal for those seeking a quieter trekking experience, but it should not be underestimated, as climbers still need to acclimatize properly to reach the summit.

An armed park ranger will accompany the team for protection against wildlife as you trek through Arusha National Park via the Momella Route. Keep your eyes open, and you’ll be rewarded with sightings of baboons, giraffes, zebras, colobus monkeys, and a variety of birds. From here, you will begin your ascent through Meru’s diverse vegetation zones, from montane forest, moorland, and semi-desert to alpine desert, until you reach its magnificent crater. Crossing the crater rim to its summit, Socialist Peak at 4,566 m, you will then have time to explore the ash cone formed during the 1910 eruption.

Remember that this itinerary can be customized to your preferences by selecting excursions or cultural activities that interest you, with price variations according to the changes made.

Route Map

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival in Tanzania.

A tu llegada te recibirá un guía de Sensation of Africa que te acompañará desde el Aeropuerto Internacional del Kilimanjaro al alojamiento en Arusha.

Day 2. Equipment check for trekking and cultural excursions or activities.

We offer optional activities in Arusha, such as a city tour or canoeing on Lake Duluti, among others. Check out our excursions and cultural activities, or if you prefer, you can use your time to relax in the comfortable accommodation.

The most important thing is to double-check the trekking equipment; we must not underestimate Mount Meru. We need to ensure we have everything necessary, and if anything is missing, it can be found in Arusha during the day.

At sunset, the trekking leader will provide a briefing on the schedule and planning.

Day 3. Momella Gate (1450 m) to Miriakamba Hut (2610 m).

In the morning, after breakfast, our guide will be at your accommodation ready for the transfer to Momella Gate, where our hike will begin with an elevation gain of 1500 m. After registration at the entrance, we will walk for about 3-4 hours to reach Miriakamba Hut (2610 m), where we will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 4. Miriakamba Hut (2610 m) to Saddle Hut (3534 m).

On this day, we will ascend a steep trail that gradually takes us through the forest and moorland to the ridge, offering a spectacular view of Mount Meru's crater. After 3-4 hours and covering a distance of 8 km, we will reach Saddle Hut, where we will have lunch, rest for a while, and then hike to Mount Meru’s summit. It takes approximately one more hour to reach 3600 m and enjoy stunning views just before sunset. We will then return to Saddle Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5. Saddle Hut (3534 m), Mount Meru Summit (4566 m), Miriakamba Hut (2610 m).

Today, we will wake up early in the morning around 1:30 AM, have a cup of Tanzanian tea with some snacks before starting our trek through the alpine desert, moorland, and montane forest. We will pass the Rhino Point (3810 m) and Cobra Point (4340 m) before reaching the spectacular narrow pass along the ridge between the steep inner cliff and the outward sloping wall of the crater, leading us to the summit of Mount Meru (4566 m). If the weather is good in these early hours, as the sun rises from the east, we will witness the sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro before it illuminates Mount Meru; it is truly breathtaking to see the blanket of clouds covering everything in sight from the summits of Africa.

We will then descend to Saddle Hut for breakfast and continue to Miriakamba for dinner and an overnight stay. The duration of this stretch is 11 to 13 hours, covering a distance of 5 km uphill and 13 km downhill.

Day 6: Miriakamba Hut (2610 m), Momella Gate (1450 m), and return to Arusha.

After a good breakfast, we will descend through the forest area into the grasslands, enjoying the views and encountering animals such as colobus monkeys jumping from tree to tree, while listening to the birds singing and observing the open grassland with buffaloes grazing, giraffes eating leaves from the tallest trees, zebra necks crossing over each other, and waterbucks feeding near the streams... you will experience unforgettable sensations.

We will then reach Momella Gate, where we will meet our guide who will be ready to transfer you back to Arusha.

You will receive information about the next program as soon as you arrive at your accommodation.
